From Fragmented Data to Intelligent Infrastructure

As artificial intelligence, digital twins, and data-driven decision making become integral to infrastructure delivery and management, the strategic value of connected data has never been greater. Yet many organizations continue to struggle with fragmented information, disconnected systems, and inconsistent data practices that limit collaboration, reduce efficiency, and reduce the long-term value of infrastructure information.
This session presents the first findings from the ACEC Research Institute’s groundbreaking research examining the strategic value of connected data across the infrastructure lifecycle. Drawing on interviews with engineering firms and infrastructure owners, as well as results from a national survey of ACEC member firms, the study explores how connected information improves decision-making, project delivery, asset management, and long-term infrastructure performance—and the costs of operating with fragmented information. Joseph Bates, the study’s lead researcher, will be joined by industry leaders to discuss the research findings, practical implications for engineering firms and infrastructure owners, and why connected data is becoming a critical foundation for AI-enabled infrastructure and the future of engineering practice.
