Michael A. Matthews, P.E. is the CEO and founder of The Structures Group, Inc. Mr. Matthews has been a licensed engineer for 36 years and is licensed in 22 states, as well as the District of Columbia. As a long-term advocate of the engineering profession, he previously served as American Council of Engineering Companies Virginia (ACEC VA) National Director, Chairman, Chairman Elect, and as Regional Vice President, following serving as Chairman of a number of committees.

Focusing the firm on structural engineering, forensic analysis, special inspections, risk analysis, and independent plan review since 1992, Mr. Matthews has led the firm in participation in projects involving numerous types of structures, including commercial buildings, educational facilities, industrial facilities, institutional facilities, hotels, bridges, museums, parks, churches, marine structures, and historic properties in the eastern and southeastern United States as well as the mid-west. Such participation has also included responding to natural disasters such as floods, tornados, and hurricanes.

As an author on several articles on Special Inspections, Mr. Matthews also serves on the VBCOA Region Eight Special Inspections Task Force. Mr. Matthews is also one of the Co-Authors of National Practice Guidelines for the Structural Engineer of Record (CASE, Fourth Edition) and the current edition of the Hampton Roads Regional Special Inspection Guidelines and Procedures.

A sought after speaker on topics related to structural engineering and special inspections, Mr. Matthews has provided presentations at Kansas State University, ArchEX (the AIA’s largest Mid-Atlantic conference), the Engineering Excellence Awards, the Building and Code Officials Association (VBCOA) Conference, and the annual Virginia Engineers Conference. Mr. Matthews received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and holds an MBA from The College of William and Mary.
