Dr. Paul Chinowsky

Paul Chinowsky is Professor Emeritus of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Professor Chinowsky has studied the consulting engineering industry and its practices since 1994. His work has resulted in publications addressing strategic management in the industry including a foundational textbook, “Strategic Management in Engineering.” He has looked at the role of strategic management in the success of firms including the critical topics of strategic positioning, market analysis, technology investment, employee development, and competitive analysis. Additionally, Professor Chinowsky introduced new perspectives on the role of social networks within firms including how collaboration was influenced by trust and communication. Professor Chinowsky also worked with industry consultants to develop unique analyses of the role of mid-sized firms in the industry through multiple economic cycles. These insights led to foundational studies in qualifications-based selection, unit-based pricing, and the role of executive leadership styles.

Professor Chinowsky has also worked nationally and internationally with public and private entities on improving long-term resilience strategies. He has worked with clients in over 50 countries including public entities such as the World Bank, the United Nations, the US EPA, national and local governments.
